The Shaw Café delivers romantic Niagara-on-the-Lake appeal. A popular pre-show stop; a curvaceous exterior, window boxes trailing with flowers, a winding staircase, stone walls and marble-topped bistro tables, set the stage. Tapping into the tourist market, the menu opportunistically escalates prices, but the atmosphere more than compensates for it.
Classic standbys (wraps and sandwiches) are done well, with many healthier, light meal choices, like the pan seared catfish and seven grain salad with mandarin orange relish. The cheese and broccoli quiche is excellent with light, custard eggs, flavourful cheddar, caramelized red onion, and a firm crust. The scent of the basil pesto drizzle drifts upon you with delicious anticipation. Upstairs is a verandah patio overlooking bustling Queen St., perfect perch to enjoy a wine flight and people-watch with anonymity.
