Long, blue and narrow, Southbrook Winery communicates a serious difference of approach. LEED certified, organic and bio-dynamic, Southbrook is one lean, green force on the Niagara wine scene. Owners Bill and Marilyn Redelmeier have not only achieved in making outstanding wines, but have created an exemplary production and farming facility.
Pride of place upon entry, Southbrook’s “Green Map” is centre stage; a guide to the winery’s lighting, natural energy, watersheds, native plants and sustainable construction materials. A modern, contemporary window gives a glimpse of a private dining room with stacked wine barrels, beckoning the view of rowed vineyards beyond; a sightline carefully considered by architect Jack Diamond.
Winemaker Ann Sperling, who took home the Lieutenant Governor Award 2011, creates award-winning labels with multiple price entry points. Every day wines, under the Connect label, are a great value. Tastings are offered in themed flights, or by custom selection, catering to specific appetites, (2007 vintages, for example). Sample a flight at the bar, then enjoy a glass on the patio bistro, offering up sourced-in-Niagara creations framed by intimate vineyard views.
