Caffeine addicts and about-to-publish bloggers ditch the to-go cup and linger awhile to observe the amicable tension between the clique crowd and office workers vying for space on Mahtay’s uber-comfy cafe chairs. Grey concrete, sheet metal accents and chalkboard lend an industrial vibe that’s warmed up with art, lush vintage couches and conversation.
Coffee is fair trade, organic and roasted close to home. The menu features fresh spin-offs of the usual breakfast sandwiches “Mahtay Morning Starters”, salads “sweet and crunchy” and “toasties” such as apple, chicken and brie on-a-bun. Everyday specials, before 3 pm, attract the Brock-Uni lunchers squeezing in a snack before the big lecture. Credited with bringing a community spirit back to downtown by hosting poetry slams, art shows and live music, Mahtay is steadily turning into a place to be, meet, and create.
Lunch $5 – 15
