Featherstone Estate Winery

With a magnificent 23 acres of rolling vineyards and lush, wooded land, Featherstone lends a pastoral welcome with vegetable, herb and perennial flower gardens, roaming chickens, Bocci the dog, and a handful of helpfully grazing sheep. Solar panels line the barn roof, and the winery is insecticide-free winery.  Upping the uniqueness of this winery is the use of falconry to deter gluttonous birds from taking too much of the hard-earned harvest.

Owners David Johnson, and wife Lousie Engel, exude a salt-of-the-earth-vibe.  David’s love for amateur winemaking led him to leave his day job for a career in making beautifully crafted, small-batch vintages of Twenty Valley terroir, yielding about 5000 cases per annum.   Following his passion proved to be worth the risk as the rows of medals attest behind the tasting room bar. The 2011 Cab-Franc blend is a star; full-bodied with a smokey aroma and minerality.  As the tasting guide suggests, drinking this wine ‘could lead to singing and dancing’.  Select cheese plates, charcuterie and olive bread are enjoyed on the verandah.

Wines from $14 – 50
